Someone has brought their personal laptop in to work and im trying to install our virus protection on it. I have set the IP, subnet, gateway, DNS servers and can get onto internet fine.

I can also ping the IPs of our servers and get replies. When I try and browse to a server to install anything I get the message "Network error, windows cannot access..."

The Firewall is turned off on the laptop. Its got Vista business installed on it. Is it something simple I am missing?

Windows cannot access \\ and Error Code 0x80070035

Nope, its on our main network, I have been given the go ahead from my manager to do this. Its not connected to the domain, just plugged into our network. On a test laptop I had, i never connected it to a domain and it came up fine, a box with login credentials and all worked as usual.

It does have Norton 360 on it which i have turned off, I also turned off defender. It recognises all servers throguh ping but just cannot browse to them?

Is the network share open to 'Everyone' or is it selected users or 'Authenticated Users'

That might be the issue.

Network share im trying to access is open to everyone.
I have now put security essentials on and cleaned with ccleaner. I tried turning netbios on, off anddefault but still get the same message

One other thing to note - I can ping the IP address of servers and get a reply but when i try and ping the name of the server it doesnt find it.

browsing using the run command to both ip and server name both bring back the same network error message

Here's what ive tried...

Removed Norton 360, Disable firewall and Defender, Turned off UAC, Enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP, Cleared history, cookies etc, release/renew dns, flush dns, clear arpcache, Installed MS security essentials and VNC.
