Network Failure after sleep - iMax OSX

My iMac goes to sleep when not used but frequently when I wake it up the network fails to recover. Can't see network shares, can't see the Internet and if I try and ping the router it fails and ping reports it can't allocate memory. The only solution to this seems to be shutdown and restart.

I got disillusioned with Windows and sleep modes as many external devices seemed to fail, is OS X no better?

Should say I'm using the wired connection.

This is very odd, I sleep/wake my MBP all the time - including a connection to my mac mini which acts as my file server.

When you look at the network settings you can reorder them into the search sequence of your choice by moving them up/down. Is the "Ethernet" network connection at the top of the list?

It sounds like the wifi network component is possibly getting pushed up to the top.

Interesting idea, Ethernet is at the top of the list followed by TC65 which is a mobile phone module I develop code for. I've deleted that for now but as the iMac has done this regularly in the few weeks I've had it I suspect it was installed after this problem first appeared. I've also turned the AirPort off so we'll see if that helps.

It did it again just now, network address was valid but ping failed.

I've always rebooted before but this time I forced it back it to sleep and then woke it again and the network got better. Bit of a pain but much better than the time it takes to reboot.
