Ok, I have three machines all running XP home with service pack two installed (came pre-installed), now I'm trying to network them but not having much look. I have chacked the MS knowledge base for any suggestions and have still drawn a blank.

All the machines can ping the router, but not each other and none of them can see each other on the same workgroup (just tells me that the workgroup is unavailable). The router stats page shows that all three systems are attatched and have different ip's and the same subnet mask.

I have turned off the firewall, and made sure that netbios over tcp/ip is enabled as per the knowledge base instuctions and am finally close to admitting defeat, so if anybody has any ideas please post here.

You've probably checked these...

What's the router? Is it a switch as well and been previously configured for a different subnet.
The cables are ok and arn't crossovers.
Not using common ip addresses for routers on the PCs etc, eg 192.168.0.100 and .200
Have you got the router set as the default gateway on the PCs - does it make a diffence.

Interesting, while i've never personally had this problem before, Badass currently has it at the moment. The only thing that instantly comes to mind is ICMP stopping response to pings.

The router is my old one from home, an older d-link, but was taken straight from my home network (after setting back to factory settings). Yep, checked all cables, ip addresses and that the router is the default gateway.

To answer sja 360, yes they are machines from the place rhyming with hell, although had a little more success tonight, I had one machine see the entire workgroup, although the others refused to see themselves, and conversly couldn't see the workgroup either.

This one has me stumped.

^ might have to give that a try, I have a crossover cable lying around here somewhere.

Go to the command line of the machines and type in the folloing commands and put the outputs here. Try pinging each of the machinnes before you run these commands but don't include the ping output.

ipconfig /all
route print
arp -a
