network hard drive issues

ok, so here is the thing. I have got a 2TB HDD in a usb enclosure hooked up to my router (have tried this with the homehub and a dynamode router, same outcome). everything is good, I can stream music and videos fine from it over the network, but I cant save large files to it. when saving it is really slow, 1.4MB/s max, but if its a large file, over around 300mb I think, it gets so far and then says unable to connect to drive, run network diagnostics.
I can transfer files between laptop and pc at around 5-8MB/s and large files work fine too, so I know its not the network as such.
the drive is setup as samba on the dynamode (not sure what it is on the homehub), not that I have any idea what that is or if it makes a difference.

any ideas?

E : I also tried a different external drive that connects via Ethernet and still exactly the same :(

I believe I have your answer. Go to Network and Sharing. Click on Change Advanced Sharing Settings. At the bottom is File and Sharing connections. Select the radio button to enable 40-56 bit encryption. Save Changes.

After doing this my samba shares appear in network neighborhood. Before that, they did not appear, but I could access them with \\servername in the address bar.

does it sound like the issue, if so, will changing the encryption cause any other issues in the network?

ok, well it streams fine, so will just plug it into laptop via usb to transfer the files over then connect back to router for streaming after.
