Network Issue

I've come accross a network issue which I've not come accross before.

Two PCs, both going into a Switch. When trying to open a shared file, even a 1Meg Jpeg file it takes over an hour.

It used to be instant, there is no security software installed and nothing configuration wise has changed as it's a standalone network with no internet access.

Any ideas?

I'm thinking it might be a DNS related issue which is causing it to take ages to do lookups.

start from the ground up with real basic stuff...
try a crossover between the two machines to rule out a duff switch
try replacing the cables between the machines and the switch to rule out duff cabling
try re-installing the existing nic's to see if it is a software issue
try replacing the nic's to see if it is a hardware issue
try going via ip instead of name
etc etc etc

Good sound advice.

It's extremely unlikely to be DNS - it would take time to find the IP but transfer quickly, rather than take ages to transfer.
