Iam having problems with connecting to my network. Just installed vista on a new build and can't access any shared files across the network. Typed in the correct workgroup name and change pc name.

Any ideas people? Ive set the network as private, which I think is right for a home network.

Ive just managed to get my vista pc to see my laptop and I can transfer files. But on the laptop win xp I can see the vista pc under workgroup's but when I try to connect it asks me for a username and password. Ive not set any though, does anyone know if there is a default pw and un? Or how to turn the login off?

edit:can;t even see the workgroup on my laptop now

i think wth new security routines in vista you must have a password, a bit like trying to remote desktop in xp, it wont let you connect without a password and if there isnt one set it gives you a guffy fail message, try it and see.

This is the point jimmy, you need to set one if i remember rightly, go into users in control panel and set one. even if there isnt one itll still ask.

That feature has been there since Windows 2000. (unless Guest has been configured)

In all the years since 2000 was released ive never seen a 2000 workgroup, its always been domain orientated though so i didnt think it was worth mentioning.

I just thought i'd mentioned it because not setting a password is a mistake that comes up a lot on this forum with people trying to set up p2p networks with XP as well as Vista.
