Hello!

My locale is currently being upgraded for 1Gbps FTTP, so I'm hoping the service will go live in the next few months. I'll be switching provider when it does, and will likely be using the Fritz!Box 7590 that they supply.

I also have an unused/unopened (long story) Asus AC68U that I bought a few years back. Would I be able to use this on my network with the Fritz being the modem/router, and the Asus as, say, a switch (will need extra ethernet ports) or WiFi extender or something?

I tried Googling this combo, but as Fritz are a German company, I couldn't find many helpful results in English.

You could use it as a switch, wireless bridge (connect it to the Fritzbox wireless and bridge to the Ethernet ports to get you wired ports in a far away room for example)

Maybe use it to terminate VPN tunnels if the software on it is more feature rich than the box from the ISP (which seems quite likely?)

You could use it for a number of things, but if it’s just for the sake of it, then consider selling it and buying something that is better suited to doing whatever you actually want.

Cheers. Plenty of possibilities to look into.

As stated in the OP, I'll definitely need a switch, but I suppose I could sell the Asus unit and buy a cheap non-managed switch for my uses. Good idea.

You can use it for many things. You might just say get away with a door stop if you lucky.

Possibly a little light though would depend on your position you put it in but you might be able to jam it under.
Excellent thoughts.
