network noob requires help [file share between 2 pcs, same location]

Having posted in the general section after a wirless card some more ideas came up.

Basically i want to send large amounts of data [ie dvd/blu ray rips] from one pc to another.

now i do have the possibility of physically linking the pcs, but i dont know how to or what hardware i need.

i could do wireless, but that isnt great, i would also need a new transmitter [N] for both pcs, and a new router, and then it wouldnt be as fast as wired.

homeplugs, these came up, but i am unsure of if they would need to be plugged into the router, if so thats a no for this project, the router is too far away, the pcs are only a few feet, if they do not need to have a router its viable.

the ideal way would be to connect the pcs together via ethernet socket, dont laugh, but do i just need a cable to do this?

Both my p6t se 1366 and p8H61 motherboards have a 1Gbit port.

i really dont have a clue when it comes to networks
 
they only need to connect to the house router via wifi,

the wired connection is just between the 2 pcs. is that still ok?
 
think i need to do some reading on networking! :)

ok a cat5e/6 cable
plug it into each ethernet port,
set it up on each pc [ips etc]
good to go?

both pcs will have their own wireless card for inet, is this ok and will keep separate from the wired connection and wont cause any conflicts?
