Hi,

I Have a setup as follows:

networkgy0.jpg

Currently both the router and switch are 100Mbit, and I would like to upgrade to 1000Mbit. If I just upgrade the switch will it work at gigabit speeds? Or does LAN traffic still go through the router? Both PC's use the routers DHCP server.

Also does Cat6 cable present a noticeable performance boost over cat5e when dealing with gigabit networks?

Thanks
Jack

Upgrading the switch is enough. Cat5e should be fine, you won't notice any improvement with Cat6, unless the Cat5e is just bad quality and won't support the Gig connection

If you've got any plans to implement VLANS in your network then you'd need to make sure the router supports gigabit speeds, as VLAN traffic has to be routed.
