Having recently taken a role in my company as Desktop Support Analyst i thought it was about time i really got to grips with the finer details of networking. Now most things I', able to do at work but we have a much more complex and better designed infrastructure than i do at home!
It seems i have fallen at the first hurdle somewhat.
Scenario -
I have 3 Desktop machines in the house, 2 laptops and a NAS(wip). I want (for the moment) to share my 1TB Media HDD in my main PC. Sharing is not a problem, its setting the permissions that im having problems with. For now only concentrate on my PC and one of the Laptops. I have set the 1TB Media drive to be shared and given it a name. (\\Tom-PC\Music and Film)
I now want to set permissions, so that only certain users regardless if they try and access the drive from the local machine (Tom-PC) or from the laptop. When i go to:
Advance Sharing > Permissions > Add i only have the option to search users from TOM-PC. The box is inactive so i cant change it to LAPTOP and then have it search for local users on the laptop. I have a few ideas as to why its not working but no solutions!
My guess is that Windows Homegroup doesnt share any user id information. Is the only way around this to setup a server running AD in something like VMware? If so a step by step guide we be greatly appreciated!
