im trying to set up a printer using a network cable, directly from my laptop is this possible and if so how?

Thanks

Dave

Assign a static IP to the laptop Ethernet port (eg 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0).

Assign a static IP to the printer via the front panel menu (eg 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0)

Connect the laptop to the printer (you may need a crossover cable).

Run setup from the HP installation CD and tell it you want to connect through the network when you get the option.

attach your printer to the network, wait 1 minuit till it gets a dhcp address (if it is not set to manual) and print a configuration page out, put the ip address into the web browser and you might get a configuration page up therefore you can add a static addess within your ip range. Reboot the printer for changes to take effect. Use the "add printer wizard" from start printers to direct connect to the printer and browse for the drivers. when completed you should be able to print a test page out when it requests too.

To complicated? then maybe the above poster is an easy method (depends how much computer knowledge you have).

I assumed that the OP was wanting to connect his laptop directly to the printer using a network cable. I'm not sure whay he would want to do this rather than using USB, but people do all sorts of strange things.

If he is wanting to connect directly then there won't be a DHCP server available is issue an IP address to anything. If he's just trying to network the printer normally then it should just be a matter of RTFM.

Yep, that case a straight through will be perfectly fine.
