looking to get a decent (cheap) network printer with low per page costs.

ideally want something i can just plug into a a network port and have access to from various computers

now heres the problem

systems that will be using it are a mix of mac and pc (win7)

is there anything i should look out for in particular and can someone spec me a very easy plug and play solution that will work for everything in the house?

was thinkinga bout a cheap laser off the bay of E and just retaining our current c4480 for colour use connected to one system only

Alternatively can anyone recommend a way to allow me to give access to our C4480 to the mac(the win7 machines all happily see it as a network printer but the mac cant find it :(

Anything HP will work out of the box with Mac and Windows.

I'd just get the cheapest printer you can get that has the cheapest consumables, regardless of whether or not it has ethernet, and if it doesn't add a cheap JetDirect Ex to it.

If the Mac can't see the printer you need to do it manually. Under the advanced tab of the add printer bit set it to Windows after it searches for a bit then for url smb://computername/sharename . You can include your password in the url user:pass@sharename or don't and you'll be prompted and can save it to the keychain.
