Network printing probs

Current setup:

-5 pc's in the house
-2 via ethernet direct to Netgear DGN3500
-3 via belkin HD homeplugs
-Hewlett packard laserjet 1022 (USB only, no ethernet port)

Printer is plugged into one of the pc's which connects via the homeplug. So whenever anyone wants to print we have to turn this pc on.

Bit of hassle and I'm guessing a network printer connected straight into the router would be best but more of a last restort.

Problem:

When printing on one of the pc's (Connected via a homeplug), it prints fine first time (Autotrader this was). Then click another car and try to print in quite quick succession and the egg timer appears, network connection appears to timeout or drop and have to turn off both homeplugs to get it going again. It's bizzare and I could really do with sorting it out as it's very frustrating! The internet and network work fine other than this little printing bug it appears.

Not sure what's causing your issue, but you could get a cheap HP JetDirect 175x from the online auction place and make your USB printer a nice network printer for less than £20.

Oh whats that? Plug that into the mains, the printer into that and then an ethernet from that into the router? Sounds perfect, if I have interpreted that correctly.

Yup, the jetdirect are excellent too. I have one and it is flawless.
Just set it as a local printer on a TCP/IP port when installing. Select jet direct card and printer model and you are all done. Printer can be left on permanantly.

Cheers dude!

Those jetdirects look like nice solutions - are they HP proprietary, or can they be used on any USB printer?

In theory they should work with any USB printer. I've got (albeit an older LPT not USB) a jetdirect with a lexmark laser attached to it.
