hey guys could really use your help here please, im trying to sort out a local network here at home and its send me freaking crazy.

this is the gear that i have and the end result i want:

my pc = pc1 (xp pro sp2)
dads pc = pc2 (xp pro sp2)
gf's laptop = pc 3 (xp home sp2)

the router that i use is the bt voyager 210.

in my room i have pc1 connected to the 210 via usb
in living room i have pc 2 connected to 210 via lan
pc3 is connected to pc1 via crossover cable

This is all working fine all pc's connect to the internet the problem im having is sharing files from pc1 to pc2.

pc1 can view and use files from pc2 and pc3 (happy with this)
pc3 can view and use files from pc1 (also happy with this)
pc2 can see pc1 shared folder but gets an error msg saying path is incorrect when i try to open.

if i run network setup and set it up that pc1 and pc2 connect to the net via a hub it works fine i can share the files BUT then pc3 gets the error limited or no connectivity and cant connect to the net.

I think the problem im having is a firewall issue but i have no idea how to fix it, let me explain:

running network setup i set pc1 to connect directly to the net and others connect through me (for pc3)

network setup on pc2 to connect to the net through hub

and network setup on pc3 to connect through another pc (pc1)

this all works fine for them all going on the net but like i say pc2 cant see the files from pc1 the only way for this to work is if i disable the windows firewall on pc1 hence why i think its a firewall problem.

if any of you network guru's could possibly help me out on this i would be chuffed. if u need more info please ask away

Thankyou guys

1st)
Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Chose the connection you want to share the files through > Right click on it > Properties > In the "This connection uses the following items" make sure they all have a tick beside them

2nd)
Start > My Computer > Right click on the drive you want to share > Properties > Sharing Tab > Enable sharing to the root of the drive

Should be done I think

ok ive got pc1 and pc2 up and running on the net and they can share files between eachother but on the laptop which is connected via crossover cable is getting limited or no conectivity

if i right click on my network connection that connects me to the net and tick the share internet connection they can all connect to the net but then i loose the ability for pc2 to get files from pc1, if i disable my window firewall it works.

doing my nut in :(

ok.

1) What if any difference will i get if i disable windows firewall, can i get hacked etc

2) Anyone know how to configure windows firewall to allow sharing between pc2 and pc1

Well your chances of getting hacked are increased due to not having a firewall.

Do you have another firewall on your PC?

I dont think you can create a rule with Windows firewall.

Personnaly I WOULD keep the firewall on.
Couldnt you just scrap the crossover cable from PC3 to PC1 and connect PC3 to the 210 via LAN?

I always have my firewall on, because people say you wont get hacked, but it will be sods law and within 5 minutes you will be hacked somehow

My advice. Get an adsl router. Save yourself hours of messing about, you can get them for less that 20 quid now. Im imagining you have easily wasted 20 quids worth of time ;)
