I was at a place today doing work and a problem has arisen with one of the machines on their network.

They have 4 machines connected to a DG834PN router.

3 are Win98
1 is XP

There is one Win 98 machine this morning has for some reason is unable to see the WinXP machine on the network. It can see the other Win98 machines but just can't see this XP machine which is esential for their daily use.

All other machines can see the WinXP machine except this one. However the XP machine can't see it.

They can ping one another but can't see each other in Network Neighbourhood/Network Places. This is a must to enable the mapping of a folder on the XP machine.

Everything looks spot on but I'm still scratching my head still.

No firewalls are running, Workgroup is how it should be etc.

Any suggestions would be great.

Bloody Win98.

Do you have a DNS server on the network (possible as part of a route)?

If not then one of the PCs will be acting as your DNS server, when the PCs are turned on you need to give them time, upto about 15 minutes to sync up their DNS entrie from the DNS server.

Give it time and it should sort itself out...this is a known problem with Win98
