Ok I got a Netgear Router and 2 computers via wired connection and 1 wireless.

Now here is the problem my computer and the laptop (Via Wireless) can see and exchange files and vice vera.

BUT we cannot see the downstairs computer (Via Wired) but that computer can see the laptop and my computer but we for some reason cannot access that computer ?

The computer that cannot be seen on the network (It shows up and grouped computers but when double clicked comes up with \\Johnathon is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission.

The computer downstairs has guest account turned on and windows firewall is deactivated (No padlocks on network connections) but we cannot access his computer although he can see and access ours.

Downstairs WindowsXP SP2
Laptop WindowsXP SP2
My Computer Windows MCE

Anyone got any ideas ?

I dont think this has as much to do with the router as it is his computer so thought it might be a settings issue on his OS since he is the only one that can see all persons connected to the network but no-one else can see his ?

Also file sharing is enabled on the downstairs computer because them wee little blue hands are there on the drives ???

/me awaits imminent move of post to Networks forum

Anyway, I suppose the most obvious thing to check first off is, are all the machines in the same workgroup?
i.e. if you right-click on my computer, go to Properties and the Computer Name tab, do they all have the same workgroup shown?

Yes all in MSHOME and I did not see a networking forum sorry.

By all means move this thread there I would have posted there myself but must have looked past it a hundred times (Not quite with it today)

No problem, Im not getting at you, I just thought it might be worth mentioning for future and was more a cue for any passing mods to move it as you'd probably get more help in there :)

Now my hands-on knowledge of Windows-based home networks is a bit rusty but...

1) are all the machines on the same subnet?
2) I would check the list of running services on the machine that isn't playing ball with those of the ones that are. In particular look for the following services and ensure they are running:

Computer Browser
Net Logon (set to manual)
Network Location Awareness
Remote Access Connection Manager
Remote Procedure Call
Server
Workstation

3) Finally, what if you explicitly create a share on the non-contactable machine with all users granted read access? Can you browse to it with \\Jonathan\Sharename (once youve created it of course) ;)

The only process I seem to see is Server.exe.

As for #3 im not quite sure what you mean.

If I was able to access his computer at all it would come up with an empty folder with no drives but it is like his computer isnt even there ?

Make sure you turn off "Simple File Sharing". (My Computer>>Tools>>Folder Options>>View>>Use simple file sharing (recommended)>>untick.)

Next step, create a share on each PC -
PC1: C:\PC1share
PC2: C:\PC2share
PC3: C:\PC3share

Give out full permissions on each of these folders.
Right Click Folder>>Sharing and Security>>Share this folder>>Apply
Right Click Folder>>Sharing and Security>>Permissions>>Allow Full Control, Change, & Read>>Ok>>Apply.

Write down the IP Address of each PC.
Eg PC1 = 192.168.0.1
PC2 = 192.168.0.2
PC3 = 192.168.0.3

Now you should be able to share between each PC.
Test it by going to PC1. Click Start>>Run>>\\192.168.0.2
The shares on PC2 should pop-up for you.

Hope this helps.
Btw, dont create shares on your desktop.

Sorry I have not been back ina while.

I have MS TCP/IP V6 installed and my dad has not. could that make a difference ?

Also in his networking connections he has a residential gateway section and I do not.

Also when using program like bittorrent as soon as its started on his machine the router denies everyone access to setup page and it takes several retries to load up 1 page ?
