Hi there,
I'm in the process of redoing my setup now and I'm trying to find out if there are any products on the market which can do the following:

1) Allow the baseunit to be in another room whilst everything else is in another.
2) I don't have any direct cat5e which aren't used for general networking, so I'm looking for a solution which is IP based so I don't have to direct cables and also I've got about 5pc's I need to connect, each to have its own monitor/keyboard/mouse.

Does anyone know of anything - and is it suitable for playing games over?

Thanks.

Closest thing you are going to get with PC in one room and Router in another is a homeplug kit:

They allow you to route TCP/IP over the powerlines in your house provided you don't have a split mains circuit.

thats not really what hes asking.

there are such products allowing you to do an IP KVN type thing, but they are usually high end networking kit, ie not cheap.

i remember blackbox doing a networked KVM over ip, allowing you to use your keyboard/mouse/screen from 1 computer on any other computer on the network.

as for playing games, they'll be perferctly fine.

there is also the option of VNC, but they are generally not good if u want to play games over them

Hi Cycrow,

I've been looking into the IP KVM units, and it does seems like the only solution. But I haven't been able to find it its able to use with 5pc - with 5 users input/output (if you know what I mean?)

i've been looking for something simlar, but not really found anything in a decent price range.

the ones i found were in the £5k range.

i ended up just getting monitor/keyboard extension cables and running them between the rooms

i have all the pcs i wanted to control in my attic connected to a kvm then have the monitor/keyboard in another room.

what is it your trying to achive with your setup, are the pcs all in different rooms, and need to be able to access them all ?

for just general access, VNC would be the best for that, but generally too slow for gaming

At the moment all the PC's are in the 'office' room, but I'd like to take them all out (to reduce heat, and noise) and stack them up in a 'server' room. But the problem is with 5Pc's and the distance between the rooms of 30 meters - CAT5/6 seems the only solution.

I guess I'll wait until something more suitable comes on the market.....

Thanks anyway for your input.

simlar setup to me, althou i keep my main pc that i game on in the room.

best i could suggest would be to get a standard KVM in the server room, then find a way to get the cables to your office.

maybe if u can find a way to send the monitor/keyboard data down a single cat5 cable would be cheaper than trying to get a 5 port networked KVM.

luckily for me, the servers are directly above the room so it was just a matter of running the cables through the floor

if u only game on 1 pc, then a cheap solution could be to leave the gaming pc in the room and move the rest out, and just use VNC on the rest.
that wouldn't cost you anything, and then you can wait until you find a b etter solution

You haven't said what your budget is, but another option would be to have five "Wyse thin clients" in your office room connected to a beefy PC / server in your server room.
