Hi, so I bought a Synology DS212j a few months ago from OCUK, however I have found it to be running quite slow with the things I have set up on it(wordpress, forum, wiki, file storage, media streaming to local and remote users) as well as it using most of the processing power when running virus scans, so i don't think that it is powerful enough for what i need. I have also set up a USB printer to it for network access, however it is only connecting locally intermittently and getting quite annoying.
My next idea is to create a dedicated low power server made from proper PC components running windows server (which i can get from dreamspark for free) for upgradability and more accessible settings etc...) based around an i5-4570S
Running it with an active directory for the three household PC's for easy file sharing and file accessibility (the family is switching between these pc's depending on who is using one of them) so a domain with accounts and files stored on the server would be quite handy.
Also I want to be able to plug in and share the USB printer (with scanner and card reader built in) with all of the computers and full functionality (sharing the card reader drives as mapped drives which was not available from the 212j), as well as hosting a few websites from it and using it for remote file access for when family members are away from home so i'm wondering if all of this is possible from it, and what the best way to go about this is.
thanks,
Alasdair.
I was wondering about your opinions on this :S
