Hello.

Currently with vm and the sh2 running it in modem mode and the dlink exo 879 router.

I have ran a long ethernet cable up stairs to a netgear network switch which has a 2nd router installed as we get no wifi signal upstairs towards the rear of the house.

Now im confused on the next part as I believe I have to set the 2nd router to 192.168.2.1??? However I cannot access the routers settings as it only ever takes me to the dlink page regardless, even with the upstairs hard wired to the tp link ac router.
Does anyone have any suggestions or.tips on.how.best to setup the extended network please.

Fwiw with the setup exactly as it is the xbox one receives the double nat error and is unable to play any game whatsoever online.

Thanx in advance for any help

Both routers have a different static IP right?
No idea as I cant access the 2nd routers settings page as it keeps taking me to the dlink page instead.

Im wondering if It should have went sh2>network switch then added the 2 routers that way??? Not too good with networks whatsoever

If they are both default config you'll have duplicate addressing and dual dhcp servers, configure the 2nd router by only connecting to it in isolation, disable dhcp and give it a different address, you'll be using it as just an AP and switch.

Can it be accessed if its connected.via ethernet to my main pc with no internet connection at all???

IP addresses has to be unique to each device. That's how networks work.
so it doesnt matter what static ip address i input?? how does the mac address work as i need one as well??

as soon as i disable the dhcp the modem is unusable for internet connection. totally puzzled now

1) Go into your first router settings and post a screenshot here of what your ip settings are.
2) Only connect 1 PC to the second router and then also post a screenshot of the ip settings of the router 2.

Running 2 routers is just wrong, one of them should be an access point really. OR run power lines. This would help your issue massively.
running powerlines is not an option as its an old house with split circuits i believe. when i plug a powerline in downstairs it runs great move it upstairs and no signal and vice versa

also i only need toe 2nd router to provide a wifi signal upstairs and nothing else

If you're adding a second router to act as an access point it needs to be connected to the rest of the network using one of its LAN ports. The WAN port won't be connected to anything.
yeah thats the way i have it atm. everywhere ive read says the 2nd router shoud be set as 192.168.2.1 however both routers will not allow me to do that whatsoever

That IP address is an example, it varies between networks as every network is different. I have a 10.0.1.0 network just because that's what I like working with but the IP's MUST be unique.

You should also only have one DHCP server on the network otherwise there will be problems.

yeah i have disabled dhcp and nat on the 2nd router. thing is all the mobile phones and firestick connect to the 2nd router perfectly fine with great wifi access. yet come to the xbox one which is mainly what its needed for and it throws up numerous errors like dns is not resolving xbox server names etc. puzzles me completely as networking is not my thing

Thnx for all the advice guys but I think I may need to give this a miss and tell the children that theu cannot access xbox live.

Ive been at this sunce monday morning and followed numerous guides to the letter. Reset the routers numerous times. The best I can get is everything to access the network bar the xbox one and its starting to irritate me now

Only if money is a big issue. The real way is proper access points as you can have one in each room if you really wanted too without any issues at all...

Internet > Router > As many AP's as you like...
Money is the main issue as its hard finding the sort of money the AP cost, especially with being a single parent

How's the xbox connected? If you're using wireless now could you use a cable instead?
Its not really an option either. It was initially connected via ethernet however the 2 younget children kept pulling the cable resulting in my oldest son tripping on the cable and going head first down the stairs breaking his right arm and fracturing his left wrist hence tring to get wifi working

Disconnect the 2nd router from the network then see if you can log in,if you can disable DHCP.
Dhcp and nat are both disabled on the 2nd router. With the 2nd router disconnected everything works fine. With the 2nd router connected everything works fine and the phone's and firestick connect fine its just the xbox one that throws up errors about dns and xbox cant resolve the issues
