Hi guys, hope somebody can help as I am a little bit stuck.

I am setting up a small virtual environment at home for testing, using VMWare Workstation 7.

I have

1 x Server 2008 R2 DC with 2x NICs
2 x Windows 7 Pro 32 Bit Clients

The virtual network and domain need to be completely isolated from the hosts network. All three VMs are sitting on a Host Only network in Workstation. The virtual domain is set up and is fully functional and does everything i need it to do. So far so good.

Now I need to give the network internet access without connecting it directly to the physical network.

I added another network card to the server with a bridged connection and the internet is working on the server itself.

Is there any way I can provide the internet access to the client machines as well via the Server. I tried a couple of methods like static routing but it didnt work very well. The server is the default gateway on the clients. Also both networks are on different subnets.

the external is a : 10.40.33.x -- 255.255.248.0

isolated network is : 192.168.10.x -- 255.255.255.0

I have tried searching around but did not come across any good explanations or examples of setting something like this up. My networking knowledge is not very deep but please feel free to through jargon at me i wont cry :)

Thanks a lot in advance

i did think about that but was not sure how to approach it.

do i need to set up a squid with a different port on the DC to serve as an internet proxy? or set up another vm with a tiny linux distro?

vyatta is a good linux distro/proxy/firewall

As for the network setup, for windows to be your router you would need to install the RRAS services, or use ISA.

do you guys know any good free products i could use on windows apart from ISA?

I have a little experience with squid but could not find any decent set of instructions on how to set it up on 2008R2

You need a router because you have two different networks there.

I personally would just set another IP on each machine with default gateway of the servers internet IP, and configure your domain to only use the host only adapter

Have you considered that your DC is multihomed? You'r poisoning DNS by having dual nics on the DC which the clients wont be able to access.

You need to remove the option on the external nic to not register in DNS, then restart netlogon service to register the correct addresses.

I personally would just install Routing and Remote Access role on the DC if its a test lab. Its very simple.

Default gateway on the external nic of the DC, no gateway on the internal nic. Then each VM has its gateway of the DCs internal IP address. Install RAS and I have a feeling it'll work out the box - if not there's plenty of guides.

A proxy is only so good - you'll be buggered if you want to router none http / https traffic such as RDP etc...

thanks ecksmen:

i think thats exactly what i was looking for. I am new to the RRAS role. would you be able to tell me what I need to enable to set up the routing?

I have installed RRAS and used the Custom settings-Connect 2 private networks.

not too sure what to do next

Thanks a lot ecksmen!!!

just managed to get it working! you were right..once you set up the RRAS as a NAT and choose the destination it just works out of the box.

Do an nslookup from one of the client machines of the domain name to ensure you have the correct records.

nslookup - your.domain

You should only see the internal IP if all has gone well.
