so ran update today on my windows server 2016 machine and now i cant access its shares via ip address. i can however access them via hostname: \\server
tried some stuff like reboot server, upgraded network driver and same issue.
was working fine before the update, any idea what it could be?

weird thing is that i can remote desktop the machine by using its hostname or its ip address. just cant access its shares via ip and only via hostname.
hopefully @Avalon can chime in on this.

interesting, checked settings on a different server and only thing i can see is that netbios over tcp/ip is disabled on the server im having an issue with but enabled on the one thats working fine.
cant seem to enable it either. not sure whats going on

so, getting closer i think. when i ping the hostname in return it gives me a reply from the ipv6 address. no ipv4 this is probably why not getting picked up
why though im not sure

Yep got NetBIOS over tcpip working by uninstalling network card and reinstall it.
Now heres the kicker, no matter how many reboots and settings changes I made it made no difference. In the end I thought about it a bit and decided to power off the machine and turn it off from the mains for a bit. Once powered back on its working properly now.

Should you even be using netbios over tcp? That's a 1987 hack of a 1980s protocol and completely irrelevant in a modern Windows environment.
File sharing should be over SMB. However, DNS working correctly is a prerequisite for this. Sounds like your DNS wasn't...

yep dont think it made a difference with the netbios but 2 machines showed it on and this one with the issue had it off so not sure on the dodgyness there. windows update was the cause since before that everything was running fine with 158 days uptime.
