i am try to restrict access to my files on my home network, at the moment everyone can access my shared files, but i want to stop certain users to getting to stuff, i found this tutorial here but i cant get the security options, i have very basic share settings, i am probably just been really stupid her and missing a tiny thing, but im not sure what....

cheers for any help

the permissions will work but you will have to use the classic OSI security model

my computer > tools > folder options > view > untick use simple file sharing

that will display the NTFS permissions you can see in the picture

IIRC best way is to create guest user accounts on your PC and assign permissions to those accounts, or even better create security groups and add the accounts into the relevant security groups. This is only dooable if you have XP pro, well without a lot of bother anyways.

security groups is by far the best way to do it for network shares, these can be created by right clicking my computer, select manage > click on local users and groups, click on groups and select add group. You then apply permissions to these groups on the share Not the user account. You the add the user into the relevant groups

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...proddocs/en-us/lsm_create_group.mspx?mfr=true

check the above

so there no way to just make them enter a password to get to shared files like on nt etc, if I have to create a network domain etc is this instead of workgroup? how would I do this.

cheers for that mate, that was exactly what i was looking for! i can remeber having it but after a format i lost how to do it. Cheers for the help
