Network slow - plenty bandwidth

I have a network of 8 computers. Largely used for internet access - during the day the network slows up lots, at the slow times I do a speedtest and there appears to be lots of bandwidth available so its not the internet connection.

My question is can a low quality firewall/router cause issues with web browsing?

What are the 8 computers doing network wise? And a really old router could have problems with a lot of clients and thus a lot of connections.

The router might be slow at resolving DNS, which would make browsing feel slow.

Mainly web browsing, email checking , music streaming.

There is no transfer of large files during the day - backups are done at night.
