Network solution for 6 person student house

Have you read the thread? Of course, if the ISP is crap QoS wont make the slightest difference, but if like me you have a good connection then QoS allows you to get the most out of it regardless of what others are doing however you're only as good as you're rules.

If you give one MAC P1 rating and then they torrent you may aswell not bother.

Therefore I think you need to do a QoS policy but also block outbound ports and only open what is really needed (this is easier for some games... YMMV).

Consumer level ISP's are all going to be the same. If your computer is asking for a lot of data (downloads) then QoS will have little to no effect unless its enabled on the ISP's end.

Blocking ports is also a bit of a waste of time, as is traffic shaping, unless you control the infrastructure on both ends. Two routers maybe a different story however?

Edit: Just realised my thread display mode hid RimBlock's posts, so apologies for that. Yes, exactly what I would do.

I've got an E3000 myself. Bought it about a month before the newer models came out which I'm cursing myself for, but it's doing its job. The firmware and web interface could be better (still have a somewhat glitchy 5GHz connection to my WUSB600Ns) but the hardware itself seems solid.

Not keen on the new Linksys models. They seem like a completely seperate entity from Cisco reliability...and they look pretty naff too imo.
