I've just upgrade my switch, shiny new 10/100 with lots of ports
but I was wondering what kind of speeds I should be getting?
copying files from one PC to another (large, 2GB or so) gives me approx 10.7MB/s according to vista (from vista to XP pc)
nothing else beween the PCs, just cable-switch-cable, should I get faster than that? the software shows it at 100% port use on those two when it's going?

That's about right, the switch is 100Mbit, so 10.7MB would be pretty good (100/8 to get the conversion from bits to bytes = 12.5), although you might be losing a bit of speed if the machines have QOS turned on (IIRC by default windows reserves about 10% of the network bandwidth for itself or something).
