Hi all,
I'm after an HD storage devie that i can connect to my network, I've been lookg at some storage devices with in-built HD's but the capacity is'nt high enough, i was wondering if anyone can recommend a network caddie?

Or

I've been looking at this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-057-LC

I know it's USB but i was wondering if it was possible to connect this to a router using a USB to Ethernet convertor?

Thanks for any help and Merry Christmas

There are some about specially designed to work on a router, switch, hub etc... therefore having an ethernet port on them.

If you look on sites such as D-Link they will be around.

Im not sure if you can convert them like your trying to, i think that if you plugged it straight into the router using a converter that the router wont recognise it and you wont be able to access it from your computer. Find a specially designed one to do so. Ill have a look tomorrow and post my results.

I'm pretty much looking for what you are, I've seen some old netgear EtherFast network attached storage units which can carry 2 hdds and look like toasters, no longer made though. was wondering if there are any similar devices out there that can take a couple of stripped sata drives over a gigabit network, would be ace if there are.

Hi

The netgear device you mentioned is the SC101 and uses PATA drives

http://netgear.co.uk/digital_home_sc101.php

One of the guys at worked used one for a few days and then sent it back due to big issues on a mirroed raid where if drive one failed it would not rebuild the raid but if drive 2 failed it would. Obviously a serious issue if you plan on using it for a mirrored raid, I am not sure if Netgear fixed the issue or if the unit he had was faulty.

The Dlink SATA NAS is meant to be pretty good from the reviews and is something I am considering getting as I am already using the single drive PATA NAS they have but I need more storage space.

I've been after a decent NAS box for ages but they're all too expensive. I know they're tiny but it's much more cost effective to just put together a low end PC which you can then use for other tasks too. I know this will take up more space but with the right kit it doesn't have to be that big.

When a decent NAS enclosure supporting two drives and gigabit ethernet comes out at around the £100 mark then I'll make a purchase. Until then, I'll be botching together crap PCs. My current one is based on one of those VIA EPIA boards that I happened to get for free :)
