Hi All,

We need a storage solution as a backup for some stuff at work.

We were thinking of getting a NAS as a SAN is a bit overkill.

It needs to have 8GB of space and run in atleast RAID1 so 4 GB useable space, speed is not an issue.

The budget is £1000.

Any suggestions very welcome!

Cheers

Alex

Do you mean 8TB?

Just the drives alone will set you back most of your budget - once you then start including a half decent RAID card (I'd recommend RAID5 or 6 for backups) and then a decent chassis you're going to be looking at a bit more than you budgeted for, probably. :o

How about a PC, with a decent raid controller and lots of 1.5TB drives in raid 5

Motherboard with a couple of Nics.....does not need to be to powerful, then a decent SATA RAID card....and as many 1.5 or 2TB drives as you can...budget maybe a little tight.....

Also recently taken delivery of a Thecus 8800 pro. It's going to be used as a backup box for our VMs and a testing ground for MS DPM

Yeah, I agree with that, make good use of any old parts you have, get a decent RAID card and build a decent RAID 5 or 6 setup, you have both redundancies and backup solutions.

Just so happened I have a HP P600 RAID PCI-X with all the trimmings for sale if interested ;)
