I have Sky fibre at the moment and the Sagecom router only has 3 spare RJ45 sockets. In the future I will probably upgrade the router to something supporting gigabit speeds but in the meantime I need a cheap switch to add more ports to my existing router.

Can anyone please recommend something and would the addition of a switch be exactly the same as having more ports on the router in terms of IP addresses and being able to set them as fixed?

Thanks :)

Thanks Tealc. Just to double check, would the router give the switch the IP addresses meaning that I could set them as static from the router or would I need a managed switch for that?

Switches don't need an IP address to function, they work at layer 2 and communicate via MAC addresses. The only reason managed switches get an IP on its VLAN interface is for remote management purposes (not counting layer 3 switches here before someone mentions that).

I think I understand what you mean, thanks! :) I've got into the habit of using the router to assign each device's MAC address with a static IP. I started doing this when my wireless network printer kept changing IP address. It also means that I know the ip address of my devices without having to look at the router's webpage. So as long as the switch wouldn't prevent me from assigning static IPs to its connected devices if I wanted to, then I'm OK!
