Hi.
Just a quick check on something:
We have some old switches here that are going to be replaced soon. Am i correct in thinking that to replace them its just a case of unplug the old switch, plug in the new one and thats it?
I take it that configuration wise, that any computer goes on the main sockets, and the extras that are usually off to the side will be the ones that the cable back to the main switch is plugged into?
Does the switches IP make much difference configuration wise? Or can i just wack it in, it'll work, then i can change the IP at a later date to something more consistant with the other switches?

Thanks in advance all. :)

Are these just home switches?

It would be a case of just swapping them over yes and it doesn't matter what port you plug any of the PC's into if there is no config that needs setting up.

They're not home switches, its at work.
They are some old generic ones being replaced by some HP Proliant ones.

But now you got the nice new Proliants, you're going to set up some basic segmentation, VLANs, monitoring etc? ;)

Can I just ask how you got a job as a network manager if you don't even know how to swap out a switch?!
What is it with the cheakyness on this forum lately! :p
I know how to swap a switch, i know how to do a lot of things thank you very much.
First proper job where the entirity of the network is on my shoulders, no 'safety net'. So even though most of the time i know im correct in what im thinking, i like to check 'just to make sure'
I just wasnt familier with the default config on these HPs, wether they'd require some prior configuring before dropping it in. So i checked. :p
