Hi

I need to buy an 8 port Gigabit switch as I've run out of ports on my router. Any recommendation?

Is there one make that's more reliable than another or are they basically the same, and just buy the cheapest one..

Dunno if Linksys make switches but if they do, get them. Cisco for the win.
Avoid Netgear tbh.
I've got 3 Belkin 10/100 switches in my house which I've used for around 2 years now, and they're solid, never had a problem with any of them.

Cisco do an 8 port Catalyst Express 500 gigabit switch but for yourself i would stick to netgear who do very well in the consumer market place.

I'm using a Netgear 8 port switch, no complaints. About £14.

Netgear GS608 is all you need. I have the GS605 hung off my router and it's perfectly behaved.

I have a both the Netgear GS608 and GS605, great devices, cheap and reliable.

No noticable delays even when connecting between 2 PC's on different switches.

If you look at the specs on some etailor sites then you'll see the do a business class device for twice the price with better specifications.

I neary bought one but checked on the Netgear to find they have the exact same specifications... the only difference is casing and a longer warrenty on the more expensive unit.

they are not always better. for a home user, a linksys or netgear switch will provide all the functionality the majority of home users need, with a fraction of the cost of cisco or hp.

if the features on a cisco router go unused then its simply a waste of money when cheaper equipment will do.

What he said, I've had 4 Netgear devices die on me, and 0 Linksys devices die on me.

I havnt tried linksys switches myself, and havnt done much with my linksys router yet, but my netgear switch and 2 hubs work perfectly fine, my netgear router has a few problems, but thats because its old. My netgear equipment is the blue metal box type stuff, not the newer white plastic ones, so i have no idea if its just these newer plastic ones that have been doing poorly, but the old blue metal ones work fine imo.
