My Friend Asks
Hey Guys,
I'm posting here, to ask a question myself, since I am having problems.

I am trying to set up a Wireless Lan with a Dongle. I havn't got a router, and I know it can be done without one.

I am trying to wirelessly network my Dads Laptop, with my PC (Pc as the host). And then, from there, I want to allow the Laptop to connect to the internet.

I am on AOL, with an ADSL modem going straight to the internet, and I want to be able to share the internet with the laptop.
I have managed to manually configure the I.P address, default gateway, and Subnet, and both the PCs seem to be connected, from both sides. Packets are being sent and recieved, and the connection seems it is alright. I guess I am not sure how to get it now, to connect to the internet, and file share and printer share. (I haven't got any DNS configured, I'm guessing I don't need it for the lan).

I am really stuck with this one, And I really do need some help.

P.s. I am using XP, and I have disabled Firewall/Anti virus etc, and I have also changed the channel on it.

That is the product I am using. All help appreciated!!

Can the laptop ping the other machine?
You need to set up ICS (or something similar) on the PC with the internet connection. Then the laptop would get an IP, subnet mask, default gateway et al automatically, and everything (including file sharing) should all just work.

Well, Packets are being sent, according to the Connection, and what it says On Windows. When I hadn't Manually configured it, I was just getting "Limited connectivity or no connectivity at all" Message, and after manually configuring, It picked each other up, but File sharing, Printer sharing, or Internet sharing, just isn't working, Any ideas ?

That isn't terribly meaningful - you can get packets being sent without the connection being usable.
As I asked, can the machines ping each other?

Again, not terribly meaningful.
"Limited or no connectivity" = looked for a DHCP server, but didn't get an answer. ICS will function as a DHCP server. What do you mean by "picked each other up" - the two wireless adapters saw each other?

Hi, I'm the guy.

Well basically, The Laptop has scanned and picked up the Wireless lan being hosted on my PC with the dongle, and then connected successfully, and the Software that was supplied (not much, just a small program) shows that it is connected.

This may sound stupid to you, But how can I ping the laptop/Ping the PC ? Not very good at this stuff :(

I went onto the settings, I right clicked on the connection, then brought up the properties, then on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), I did the following
I configured manually the stuff to the following
The Pc:
I clicked use the following I.P address radio button, and put in
192.168.0.1 as the Ip address
Subnet as 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.0

For the laptop I did the same, except I put the I.P address as 192.168.0.2

I also went onto advanced from that window, and added the default gateway in (metric auto).

(I left the DNS server stuff blank)

I'm stuck, Tell me how to ping the PC
Is it Run>>CMD>>Ipconfig ?
If not, Please tell me how :), I am really new to this stuff, and well, I need your help desperatly.

What other Information do you need?

Start, run, cmd, ping [IP address]. You should get something like this:

Pinging [IP address] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from [IP address]: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from [IP address]: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from [IP address]: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from [IP address]: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64

Ping statistics for [IP address]:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 1ms

With [IP address] being the IP of the machine you want to ping (ie 192.168.0.1 from the laptop and 192.169.0.2 from the PC).
You'll need to set up Internet Connection Sharing too if you expect it to work - this might help. Set the machines to get IP addresses et al automatically, and file and printer sharing should more or less just work.

No, It isn't pining...

When I tried automatic, It just came up with Limited or no connectivity crappy Message, But II'I try it..

ok, I just put it all on Automatic, and its just going on the connection status:Limited or no connectivity

Edit: I just clicked status on the Laptop, on the connection it says...

Physical address: aload of numbers and rubbish
IP address 169.254.28.80
Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0
And then No default gateway or DNS server or WINS Server.

What can I do now ?

REEDIT: No no no, It isnt pinging, I was being stupid, I was pinging the laptop one, And now, it isn't pinging at all.

It will if you don't have a DHCP server (like ICS) running.

REEDIT: The laptop is pinging the PC now :l

They've randomly assigned themselves IPs (the 169.blah).

You need to do the former too.

Thank you for your help so far, The connection on my PC (which is hosting), Seems to be working, but the laptop is having problems, Doesn't seem to pick up on the wireless technology on it, and won't select it on the Options on the network, so I need to manually configure it I think..

Does the set up from the picture seem right?]

How can I actually get the laptop going, manually? Because no I.P etc is displayed for the wireless connection :(

You don't need the bridge, but there's no obvious reason why it should stop the machine being able to connect to it (except Windows' bridging can be a bit...iffy).

It shouldn't need any manual configuration as far as IPs et al go - if it isn't getting an IP, it's probably indicative of a bigger problem.

Well, I removed the bridge, Since it was messing with the wireless Network, going reset it up again, following those instructions.

ok, when I try and connect from the laptop, to the "home" network, it just stays on Waiting for network to be ready.. Then, Finally, it says "Network ready" then says Limited or no connectivity, where as on the PC, it seems fine, and it is all on automatic now.

Thats on the PC now...

Still not pinging...

Looks like ICS isn't working properly.
The "Local Area Connection 1" is irrelevant though - it's the wireless connection you're using isn't it (and it isn't getting an IP address)?

You'd be better forgetting the laptop until such time as you can get the PC getting an IP from itself.

Try running repair on the wireless adapter on the PC, and rerunning the wizard.
