hello all,

not sure weather this falls into this or the network section. but i'll post here anyway. ;)

I have a pc with xp sp2. I also have a laptop with vista 32 ult.

Im able to RDP or VNC from the pc to the laptop but can't go from the laptop to the pc (sever edtion installed on both).

I also can't ping the pc from the laptop but can ping the laptop from the pc.

I was reading somewhere that you need the network descovery patch for xp to enable this but i installed it on the xp machine but it made no difference.

In the end i managed to map the c drive of the laptop from the pc using the run box and the ip of the laptop. (workaround)

I have a router sat in the middle, i'm able to see both machines on the dchp client listing.

Seems odd that you can't really network between the two.

(or maybe i'm not doing something right!!! )

check the firewall settings? in xp sp2 it's enabled by default so that might be blocking things? there's simply a checkbox you can tick in the options to allow file sharing. :)

hi,

thanks. i should have said that while trying i disabled all fire walls but no fix.

A firewall wouldn't of stopped a ping so i think there's more of a network issue here.

what do you reakon???

check the "computer browser" service is running on both pcs. use the services control panel in admin tools to check this. obviously the workgroup name on both pcs is the same - they should both be set to "workgroup" by default.

of course none of that would explain why ping doesn't work.

i think that i need to get the ping issue fixed first.

Thats more likely the root of the problem.

cheers anyway.

My bet is on the Firewall, a badly setup firewall will stop anything from working, that includes pinging.

Just turn off the firewall for a test see what happens, it might work, it might not. :)

Not only the firewall, but Windows Server editions (and XP Pro etc) all include another layer of protection called IP Filtering. That should be disabled too.

Firewall's will definalty block a ping, if ICMP blocking is enabled.

You dont need any discovery protocols, or patches for VNC or Remote Desktop, both work just fine with plain and simple TCP/IP protocol, with no fancy extras. Just type in the IP address and off you go. Assuming the firewall is setup right. With XP's firewall, it should be as simple as enabling an exception for Remote Desktop, and Adding VNC Server (or whatever the applications called) as a Program/Service exception.
