Hi guys,

I've had little experience with Networks so I will plead complete n00byness in hope that you can help me set up my network at home.

Currently I have 2 machines, desktop (XP) and Laptop (Vista Home Basic) (wireless). I have purchased a Netgear Wireless Cable modem Router (WNR834B 270MBPS) and ISP is Virgin Media on the 20MB (cough cough) package.

I went for this particular Router as it seemed to give the bandwidth I desired for a decent Wireless connection so I could easily surf on my Lappy in another room, however the signal is poor (1-2 bars), I put this down to the onboard Wireless controller on the Lappy so I will probably invest in a new Wireless Card down the line that's more in line with the Router.

Anyways, short term fix I thought would be to have both machines running via LAN through the router, so I got a cheap 15m Ethernet cable to run from the Lappy to the Router, however I cannot get this to pick up the connection at all....

When I ran the Network setup software that came with the router it said there was an IP conflict when I had both machines wired into the router???

What I'd like to be able to is have the Internet Connection shared over both machines through the Router and if possible file access from machine to machine also, I'm sure this is reasonably straight forward however I am completely clueless and would greatly appreciate the forum's input.

Many thanks!

The router is overkill for anything other than transferring files between machines and even then it hella overkill imo, but anyway.

I would imagine its best practise to disbale the onboard wireless on the laptop and obviously ensure the LAN adapter is enabled. It's possible that this is where the IP conflict is coming from although you do not mention if you disabled the wireless on the lappy or not.

Ignore the Netgear setup wizard, it's homogay. Instead force a navigation to http://192.168.1.1/basicsetting.htm and check everything that way

File sharing between PCs would be a simple wizard on both machines

How far apart are you using the laptop from the router? If you have quite an old house its possible that the walls are blocking the signal.

Thanks for the responses guys, I've disabled the Wireless on the labby but to no avail, still don't seem to be able to get this working, even using the netgear page you supplied.

Yes, it's an old house so granted that the signal coul be somewhat compromised....

Hi,

Can you plug the laptop in directly to the router and forget the other PC for now?

At least get the laptop talking to the internet

That also doesn't work, Vista (lappy) identifies it as an unspecified network but no internet access??!?! also tried different ethernet cables just in case it was that....

if you connect to your lappy then fire up a command window and type

ipconfig /all

Can you post the results?
