Hi guys, just wondering if people might be able to shed some light.

Just had our internet activated here, I've been given an adsl router/modem (BBox) from Bouyges Telecom. No username and password. The box is pretty crap and doesn't have gigabit ports, and the wireless is poor, so I want to use my Asus RT56NU. I guess if push comes to shove I can just use it as a switch but I'd rather use it as the router..

Informations sur la Bbox

Nom FAST3504
Numéro de série 121233035304477
Adresse Mac e8:be:81:19:25:b8
Version logicielle Fast3504_5B00II
Version configuration 1.0.0

Now, I have my network all setup and running through my Asus RT-N56U as in the UK, I would assume that I simply just need to use the same type of connection as BT Infinity (PPPoE), but of course that requires a username and password - which I don't have.

The internet works (connected through the BBox atm), so can I assume that the username and password is either hard coded, or that they are using some sort of MAC address authentication?

I can disable DHCP on the BBox, but having tried this I then can't get the Asus to use it's internet connection.

Might be simple, or I might just have to phone BYG and ask for a username/password, but just wondering if anyone might know any other settings I can try on the Asus.

The RT-N56 is a cable router so if you have ADSL then you have a major stumbling block as you can't connect the WAN port form your N56 into the ADSL wall socket and use PPPoE.

They may be authenticating by CLI so radius credentials aren't needed, you may be better finding a french speaking friend and calling the ISP for advice.

Ah, that might make a little more sense. Though...hadn't even thought of trying that - I'd just disabled all the routing features on the Bbox and tried using the Asus.

At the moment, I've set the Asus up in AP mode, and it's all working, using the BBox as the router. My LAN is connected via the internet port and all devices have internet access, the wireless doesn't work at present but thats because I haven't changed the SSID/password yet.

E: if I did get an ADSL router/modem I'd definitely need the username/password.

You might be right about getting a fluent French speaker to phone up, however, I've been through all of the BBox's configuration pages and at no point can I enter connection (account) details, so as you say it might be using some other method of authentication.

Daft remark to make...is their a language option on the router? Maybe it's an option that isn't apparent.

I've spent a long time looking for one ;). I'm wondering if the device is locked down to prevent this kind of tampering.

I was considering buying the Asus DSL-N55U which I guess is the ADSL equivilant of the N56U, but if they're using some device based authentication it won't work will it?

Edit: Hmm one thing I've noticed through various reboots is the IP address staying the same. It couldn't be as simple as a static IP could it?

That line will go faster if you can get the auth details and use your own ADSL modem, the SNR margin is unnecessarily high on that.

What about using wireshark to extract the username and password as I did for my sky fiber on my asus RT- ac68u router? Worth a shout?

Ok I've run wireshark but can't seem to get a useable username/password from it.

All I get is
Does that mean that it's not using that method of authentication?

E: On further searching through more DHCP strings I did get
z:E\b@DCHmz:cSc5=z:269<dhcpcd-5.5.6android-645b8e9df01348b87 !3:;
Doesn't look like a normal user/pass string though.

Revisiting this now as I'm in a position to call the telco if thats absolutely necessary.

I know that I have a cable router and an ADSL connection - but can I not disable DHCP on the modem, and connect the adsl modem to the WAN port on my Asus, and have it connect via PPPoE that way? Logically to me that should work, as the internet connection on the Bbox is active...the stumbling block being if the PPPoE connection requires username/password (can't remember off the top of my head will check later).

The BBox is a router not a modem. You can't just stick your router behind the BBox and expect it to accept a PPPoE connection.

Your best bet is to disable the wireless on the BBox and configure the Asus as an access point.
