Hi guys :)

As per title :P I need some advice from a networking expert :P or as close as possible.

I'm a systems admin and know the networks pretty well, however Im getting a little confused at the moment with when to use crossovers and straighthroughs.

This is my current setup :

And at the moment we have no internet access.

The interconnect patch panels are a little confusing for me.
I guess what I need to know is what cables I should use and where

Hope someone can help :)

Thanks

its likely that the switch (or even the router now) will have an mdi-x interface that will autodetect the cable type. read this as: doesn't matter whether you use a straight through or a crossover. do you have a link and activity lights on either end between the router and the switch? are the lights on the adsl wic illuminated in the correct way to indicate an active and connected adsl service? check this in the documentation for each piece of equipment if you need help with this. is the reason for the interconnects due to physically separate locations for the router and the switch? post a screenshot of the 'ipconfig /all' from one of the pc's.

quick way of remembering

if you connect together a layer 2 device with another layer2 device then its a cross cable - same for layer 3. layer 2 - layer 3 is straight

hub, switch - layer 2
router, pc, firewall - layer 3
