Ok guys basic story goes : I'm currently on wireless connection with my Be* connection i'm looking at getting it as a wired connection now but have a few basic questions before i get some cable as the cable supplied won't reach.

What form of cable do I need i.e. straight through/crossover/patch?
Is it worth getting Cat6 cable?
Will the cable length affect net performance i.e. speed/ping etc?

Just buy a cat5e cable. Don't worry about whether or not it's crossover/patch/peggy.

Cable length won't affect performance unless you get something silly (e.g. over 100metres).

Any type should do, but you really want straight through (= patch). There's no point getting Cat6 unless you're going to put GigE kit at both ends, and as long as it's shorter than 100m it'll be far faster than the internet connection.

I'd say cat5e would be fine even with gig at both ends - I've used it exclusively and even in raid to raid transfers the transfer rates have been absolutely fine with cat5e.

edit: That should be fine. I've no idea what price you're paying for it but some places do rip you off :/ I've bought 10m cables for ~£1.50. though admittedly that was wholesale. You should still be able to get it for well under £10 with a bit of shopping around.

yep unless there's a huge connection length cat6 is not needed for gbit networks but it also costs hardly anymore than 5e these days so it's upto you.
