Networking Hell

I've had it. I'm actually tearing my hair out. Something's not up and it's probably the most frustrating thing i've ever come across. I've put up with it for about 18 months but i see no reason to live with it any longer and i'm after a fix.

My first problem is this. I'm connected to a wireless network which has been setup in my house. Signal strength is always decent and accessing the internet is never a major problem. I'm aware that my ISP is actively throttling ports, i'm lucky to get 30kbps between midnight and sometime the next morning using torrents. Although this bugs me, i can live with it. Fine.

What does bug me is that at least 2 other computers on the same network somehow manage to get anything up to 200kbps at any time of the day. I've tried a number of things, switching my reserved ip address, changing the ports that are forwarding etc.

After recently upgrading my motherboard, i was amazed to find that my PCI network adapter didn't work / wasn't compatible, so i've had to buy a USB network adapter. Other than that, our setups are pretty much identical.

Secondly, when i first moved in, file sharing was not an issue. I could browse other PC's on the network, they could access my files etc. Now, it's quite different. I can browse most other PCs on the network albeit incredibly slowly. Transferring larger files takes hours!

Somewhere along the line, my PC has become inaccessable. I can no longer copy files from it to another computer. Up until i formatted recently, i couldn't even browse the files. I'm currently getting the error "The specified network name is no longer available" whenever i try to copy files.

Another thing i've noticed is that if i have something like soulseek or utorrent open, one second it'll say that the specified port is open and the next it will say it's closed. I seem to be the only one who suffers from these problems in the whole house. In short, is there anything i can do or run to test my networking hardware. We're convinced the router is bad, but what can we do to test it? And can anyone recommend a decent network adapter which WILL work in a Gigabyte DS3?

Thanks in advance :)

Ok I think we've found the problem

Apparently the firmware version 3.01.25 was shocking to say the least, leading to dropouts and other problems (that was for v2). Upgrade to the latest stable firmware, if you've got the v2 model its 3.01.31:

v1 and v3 can be found by following the links:

Otherwise if you don't want to update the firmware right away try doing a hard reset. There should be an option to download all your settings so you dont have to retype everything.

Yeah true, are you all using Wireless or cables? Or a bit of both?

It could be too much interference with wireless, or broken cable.
I usually keep the firmware upgrade as a last resort, but they say you should always have the lastest stable one.

Yeah we're all on wireless. Interestingly, i can copy large files from another PC across the network to my PC but not the reverse so it seems the problem lies with me.
