Hi,
Im pretty new to networking, and i want to move some files between a laptop and my computer. Both have ethernet NIC's and ive got plenty of cat5 cable.

I was thinking of just connecting the two computers together with the cat5 cable, and then setting up the two computers with netbios etc.

Would connecting the laptop and the computer together in this way enable to to transfer files, or would i need a router?

What you would need is a cat5 cable, how it would need to be crossed rather than a straight through cable.

If you have a router it would be easier, however if you have some crimpers you can change the cat5 straight cable to a cross over cable instead.
