Hey guys,

recently lost my whole network configuration and havn't a clue how i managed to get everything working. My problem at the moment is:

I have re-done my network, i am trying to get a wireless laptop and a lan cabled pc to go through my router and share an internet connection. I also would like to share files between them so i can access files on either computer.

The Internet is working on both. My problem however is that i can access files from my main (lan connect) pc that are on my laptop, but not access the files on my main pc from my laptop. It simply says i do not have permission...

Any clues on this? Any help would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,

P.S. Yes there are folders that are being shared.
I do not have internet connection sharing enabled (it doesn't work on laptop says ip already in use, and with main pc it just doesnt show up).
Yes i have run the connection setup wizard.
Router : Netgear DG834GT

Check both computers are in the same workgroup, though by the sounds of it this isn't the problem. (right-click My Computer, select properties, select computer name)

Also check the firewall, is it allowing inbound LAN events on both computers? (try disabling the firewalls, especially windows firewall to check)

windows firewall is disabled.

also tried disabling software firewall (lavasoft). Still no joy

Yes they're both in same workgroup.

any more ideas :(.

cheers for help,

Can the computers ping each other?

Start > Run > cmd

type: ipconfig (shows the computers ip address)

then type: ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (replacing x's with ip address of other computer)

pinging results...

Pinging from laptop to main pc is ok.

Pinging from main pc to laptop, the box just says request timed out.

that's odd

so main PC can access files on laptop, but cannot ping. And laptop can ping main PC, but cannot access files :/

Is it Windows XP, pro or home?

Is file and printer sharing enabled (network connections > right click LAN connection > properties)

Is simple file sharing enabled (in windows explorer/my computer > tools > folder options > view)

no.

If i try and enable it on the laptop it says ip address in use, and with the main pc the option is simply not there.

When you say you tried running the setup wizard, did it not complete and throw errors, or complete but not work.

I am a bit stumped, usually this sort of problem is caused by a firewall ime, but yours is diabled

oh also, if i try and enable the lan adapter on the laptop (which says is not in use) it makes my ip the default gateway, so i loose all connectivity even to the internet :/. However if i disable it then the option does not appear in wan options.

Do you have DHCP enabled on the router, so that it assigns IP addresses to the computers. You will also need to have the computers configured to have their IP and DNS automatically assigned

Yes i think DHCP is enabled. ' Use Router as DHCP Server ' is ticked.

And by saying configured to have them automatically assigned? Do you mean in the TCP/IP options where you add in the ip and add in correct dns sever ip's because that has been done on both?

*also both are pinging now*

Did you do anything to make that happen? Stupid windows

Can you access files?

By having IP assigned I mean:

ok i've done like you have in the picture, it had some ip's in there already which i set-up for torrenting.

Ok, done more fiddling about, managed to tick the "Internet and file sharing" box on the WAN connection, and now on my main pc it has come up with an internet gateway icon. However now the laptop cannot even see/access the workgroup, only the main pc can.

But the laptop can still access the internet?

Have you tried searching by computer name (ie click search in My Network Places on the main PC and enter the laptop name)?

Try restarting both. Windows tends to have a bit of a paddy when you change TCP/IP settings without restarting.

***On the internet gateway icon, instead of it just saying like yours internet connection it says... 'Local Area connection on [computer name]' and underneath it says... 'Unavailable device disabled'.

main pc can see the workgroup, laptop can't. Both restarted, still saying access denied from laptop when trying to look at shared files on main pc :/.

Ok restarted both of them again, and now i both laptops can see both workgroups and computers, but still the laptop is getting "access denied" when trying to access the main pc. Also the Internet connection icon has gone on the main pc now. (But internet still is on).

The internet connection icon doesn't have to be there, I think it depends on the router.

At least there seems to be some progress, though what is causing access to the main PC to be denied I dunno sorry
