Yknow as much as I like Vista 64 I cant help but look back to the blissful days on XP when it was a case of right click folder, share, enter name, then its shared! You could stream watch / listen to content from other pcs with ease.
Could someone PLEASE PLEASE walk me through the process of setting up a shared folder under vista 64 thats accessable from other pcs (XP and Vista 64). Nothing I have tried gets me past the stupid errors of 'lack of permission' or similar!
A cookie for the winner!

It can be a pig at times... I'll go through what I do, a lot you may have done already.

First you need to make sure that in your network and sharing centre that password protected sharing is off.

Then right click on the folder -> properties -> sharing...

Now this is where it gets confusing, sometimes I can use the share button or it's grayed out, either way you should be able to click advanced sharing.

Tick the share this folder box, give it a name then click the permissions button, click add and type in "everyone" (without the quotes ofc) click ok and give "everyone" the permissions you want and ok everything.

That should work, however... If you are still getting the "permission denied" or similar;

right click on the folder -> properties -> security, below the "group or usernames" box click edit and again add and type everyone again click ok and give them the permissions you want with the tickboxes.

That should work...

If for some reason you're still gettting a prompt for username and password when you try and access it, this could be caused by you not having a password set for the administrator login.

Thank you very much. its worked one way, my main pc can access folders on my 2nd pc, but my 2nd pc cant access the main pc. I get "windows cannot access \\pcname". Not sure why, will try setting up network sharing again nsee if I did something wrong

Sharing could be fiddly in XP too. Can you ping \\pcname? Make sure they're on the same workgroup, and that the firewalls are off. If you have to run with firewalls on, configure exceptions. You could try \\ip_address too.

This is the thing that confuses me. All pcs can access pc-B's drives now, but none can access pc-A, and they are both set up the same. This stuff gives me a headache lol

Going to pay close attention to this thread. Got a Vista x64 box (PC I'm at now) and a Windows XP box that I'd like to network, if only for the heck of it. Having real problems. Can ping each machine from the other but that's it. :(

My problems are pretty much identical, for ages now I've shared a HDD from this PC on my network but now for no reason at all I cant get onto the drive from my laptop, I've changed nothing and I've re-setup the options an stuff multiple times.

But.. without any luck I constantly get permission errors and what-not. :( Both PC's on Vista, Premium + Ultimate.

I'll be doing exactly that tonight.

I've got a Vista ultimate running on my secondary PC and a home premium on my Primary.

Problem is whilst I was reading this yesterday, it seems both my PC's are named EXACTLY the same godamnit. And i tried and tried but i can't seem to work out how to change the name of the PC... :(

I think as well that Antiviruses could potentially block these connections?
