Ok so the parents are moving into a new house..its an old house with a basement and they want net access all over. Now does anyone have any experience with wireless getting down into basements? It has thick stone walls but presumably the floor above isnt made of stone :o so there shouldnt be too much of a problem with the signal getting through right?

If i get one access point, do you think it will be enough to cover the house? Or is it worth getting another access point? Is an extra access point preferable to one of the extender thingies?

how many floors?
tbh in my exp with old houses (in cornwall, with 2-3 ft thick walls) the only way to tell is to try. if all else fails get another AP and wire it over though the wall.

3 floors + basement.

actually this is in cornwall, falmouth to be exact.

where are you in cornwall? mind if i ask about your net setup mate? doesnt seem to be too much available.

Presuming that thick doesn't mean solid you could always just sling a cable down the wall and put an AP in the basement. Cheaper than homeplug with better speed, but you'd actually need to do some work :p

You could use the combination of the two: homeplugs with wireless APs at one end and connected to your switch at the other.
Cleaner than running your own cable but not as cheap.
