Is there anyway to "network" outlook that isnt on an exchange server?

Friend of mine runs a small business and has 3 computers networked and would find it usefull to have access to each others calenders.

Thanks

Isn't this doable with XP Professional? I don't have it so couldn't tell you...

Give iCal/Caldav a shot then - but i don't think it will plug into Outlook.

Alternativly (if you're feeling brave) give Scalix mail server a shot - it's free and does all the same exchange type functionality.

Never had a go at anything linux based before so think I may well give it a go!! He was also talking about setting up a file server so it could double as an email server and file server!

Right, eventually got the time to have a look at setting this up.

If I was to install Linux as a mail server is it possible to run it on an existing computer that has XP Pro on it? I keep hearing about VMware but havent a clue what thats about to be honest?

He doesnt want to spend anymore money unless he has to so this may be an option perhaps?

You *can* run the linux OS in a Vm - either vmware or virtualbox (google is your friend) but unless it's a pretty high spec box, it will be quite slow - esp if using Scalix as it's quite a hungry system.

I wouldn't run it on an XP Pro machine through VMWare Server, the resources being used by the host OS (XP) would cripple the VM anyway.

As said, scalix needs a decent amount of umph behind it.

Tell him you need to spend money to make money ;)
