I have some basic knowledge on the topic, but cant hold a conversation about it for more than "ZOMG this is black with green lights and 2 antenna".
So yeah :p

Im after something simple, cheap (but not nasty) that will let me share between 3 PC's and 2 laptops (not all at the same time, just thats what might be using it).

My current setup is:
Generic Talktalk router thats pretty much dead (downstairs)
1 wired computer (not main computer) (downstairs)
1 wireless computer (main computer) (upstairs)
1 proposed HTPC (upstairs)

I currently share between computers using Homegroup, its ok and works fine, but this requires leaving on the main computer, which is a power hog.

I have 2 options:

1) Buy new router with USB port for simple sharing and add a 500GB external HDD for simple storage
i.e.
YOUR BASKET
1 x Netgear DGN2200 Wireless-N 300Mbps ADSL2+ Router with ReadySHARE USB Port £54.98
1 x Samsung M3 500GB USB3.0 Slimline Portable Hard Drive - Piano Black £47.99
Total : £102.97 (includes shipping : FREE).

2) Buy a simple router and a dedicated NAS
i.e.
YOUR BASKET
1 x QNAP Turbo NAS TS-112 1-Bay Network Attached Storage Enclosure £119.99
1 x TP-Link 300Mbps Wireless-N ADSL2+ Modem/Router (TD-W8961ND) £34.98
Total : £154.97 (includes shipping : FREE).

Would I need another HDD to fill that with, or does it come with 1?

Option 1 seems the best in terms of price. I can also then use the external HDD for other stuff such as taking it on holiday to keep the daughter happy with her films and the likes.

Option 2 is designed for sharing, but the price is reflected in that (and the possible addition of a HDD).

Do I have everything correct?
If not someone rectify this for me please.

Personally, option 1 sounds best.
