Ive got a Desktop PC running XP which is connected to my NetGear router via a cable. My Laptop runs Vista and is conncted to the router via wireless.

Im trying to network the 2 of them together so i can share certain folders on the main pc with the laptop (ie so i can do work on websites/designs on the laptop when downstairs etc but still save them to the main pc).

But im having loads of trouble setting them up.

Ive set the names, workgroup etc - but they dont see each other.

Is there something i need to do or something im missing.

need to have user credentials the same on both systems.

So if your users name on the desktop is Spinal2k2 you need to create that user on the laptop with the same password. and if your user on the laptop is MrsSpinal2k2 then you need to create that user on the desktop with the same password as the laptop.

easy when you know how. If you got XP Pro on the desktop the turn off simple file sharing (in explorer window goto Tools>Folder Options>View tab scroll to the bottom and deselect it)

That's not true at all.

eh, ive never had to do that when networking xp - xp pc's or xp to 98/me pc's

I have found that Vista to XP and back again it solves a lot of problems. That is in my experience of managing a network of over 3000 users from win2k to vista business. (obviously each machine does not have 3000+ user accounts)

Correct as the Os's network structure is completely different to the way Vista's works. As i have said above in my experience it solves a lot of networking problems.

might by ntlm, I always have this problem at home.. If you are stuck with it asking for a password bit even though you KNOW the password and user name are correct it does not accept them try the below..

1. Run the registry editor and open this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa

1. If it doesn't already exist, create a DWORD value named
LmCompatibilityLevel

3. Set the value to 1

4. Reboot
