Networking problems - if left to automatic, hangs on "acquiring network address"

Hi

Just formatted a laptop, installed the drivers etc. But can't connect to my wireless network.

If i leave everything as default (ie, obtain ip address automatically, dhcp on etc), it just takes forever on acquiring network address (never completes it)

if i set the ip address (eg, 192.168.0.11) and put in some dns servers, it "connects" straight away, but nothing shows up in my routers attached devices page, and it can only ping its own ip address (ie 192.168.0.11) - not even 192.168.0.1 (the routers, which is also set (on the laptop) as the default gateway

any ideas?

btw, dhcp is turned on, in my router
(almost all the settings there are default settings)

Are you connecting to a wireless router? Can your laptop see the router's SSID?
