I have a wireless router what is wired to a desktop. I also access the router using a laptop over wi-fi.

Using the laptop (win7) I can remote desktop to the desktop using the desktop computer name. All good so far.

I installed a cat5 cable from the router to another room and in this other room I connected a hub to the Cat5. I then connected my TV & a Revo PC to the Hub. The network works well for all devices.

My problem is that from the laptop I can't connect to the Revo using remote desktop using the computer name assigned to the Revo. I can remote desktop to the Revo using it's IP address but this is dynamic. I'd rather use a fixed name.

What's the best way to do this? Windows 7 is on all devices (except my TV!)

I can't ping it by name or IP address. But I can remote desktop to the Revo using the IP address. This is very weird. It was already set to Home.

In the Network map from my laptop I can see the Revo. When I said it is connected by Hub I should have said Switch.

Likewise when on the Revo the network map shows the laptop.

Very strange. I would have though I could have pinged the Revo with it's IP address.

Any ideas?

If I add the IP address to the hosts file when it changes i.e. when the revo is re-booted the Hosts will be invalid.

I wonder if I can set my router to give the Revo a fixed IP. What do you reckon?
