Just installed Windows 7 on my HTPC, and need to connect it to my main PC to access my movies, music, etc, but it can't seem to find it on the network, however my Vista PC sees the 7 machine and can transfer files fine either way.

I'm connecting hardwired via a Sky Sagem router, and if I go into network properties on the HTPC, it shows the other PC, but I can't connect to it.

erm if its anything like trying to connect a linux samba partition vista, I feel your pain. let me google a minute to see if I can find the solution to my problem.

EDIT found it: http://www.builderau.com.au/blogs/codemonkeybusiness/viewblogpost.htm?p=339270746

It may help you!! Worth a shot anyway!

That works perfectly if I go in and change the setting on my HTPC every single time I want to connect to my main PC, so it'll do temporarily for now, but there's obviously a bigger problem somewhere. Cheers for the help.

I only had to set this once in vista. I have not tried on my new Win 7 install. I'll take a look and see what happens to me this week.

I would try this on the vista and win 7 pc. may hold of you set it on both.

I did it on both last night, but it appears to need resetting every time I turn either PC off!

Could it be one of the 2 machines has it's firewall set not to trust local traffic (Probably the vista machine, if it can see the win7 machine but not the other way round).

Both PC's are running Eset Smart Security 4, with the network protection mode set to Allow Trafic, and neither has Windows firewall enabled.

Can they ping each other?

Just tried from PC to HTPC, and it pings perfectly.

Currently transferring a few hundred gb of stuff between the PC's, got it working somehow after an hour or so, but it'll probably not work straight away next time either.
