Hey guys,

I need to be able to share files/printers between my Win XP Pro desktop and my Vista Ultimate laptop.

So far I can see both machines on the other and I can view the accessible recourses on both machines – but I can’t access them. I can also ping etc.

On Vista when I try to view my shared desktop folder it just times out with the ‘You are not permitted to view this recourse etc.’

When I try to view the shared folder that I’ve created on the laptop from the desktop I get a login prompt, and I have no idea what the details are – I’m not sure that any were created?

Any ideas :)

Cheers,

SW.

I had a lot of problems with this between XP and Vista Home Premium. I'd like to know if anybody can find an answer to this?

Btw - how are you connecting them? Remember you need a crossover cable if only using a network cable.

because its a workgroup you need the same user accounts on both machines. your trying to access the shared resource, the machine is saying "who are you?" the only local user accounts i have are......

ie at present you probably have something like.

XP Machine - User "Jon"
Vista Machine - User "Jonathan"

you need both users on each.

ie

XP Machine -

User 1 - Jon
User 2 - Jonathan

Vista Laptop

User 1 - Jonathan
User 2 - Jon

When you try and access a shared resource over the network, Windows checks the Local user database (in a workgroup environment). If no matching credentials are found it'll restrict access to the resource until a valid User/Pass is entered. "if your names not down, your not coming in" etc

Thanks for the responce guys :)

I've since been having a bit of a play and I can quite easily get them to talk when I use a bit of cat5 through my router - no problems what so ever.

However my wireless contection, which is how I was trying to connect them before, doesn't want to know!

The wired connection is a short term fix, but I would like to get a wireless connection sorted eventually :(

1) Make sure the workgroups are exactly the same in XP and Vista. They both have different default workgroup names.
2) In Vista turn off password protected sharing
3) Set your network to 'Private' in Vista
4) Install Layer Topology Discovery Responder onto your XP pcs.
Microsoft said:
This package contains the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) responder. The network map on a computer running Windows Vista shows a graphical view of the computers and devices on your network and how they are connected by using the LLTD protocol. The LLTD responder must be installed on a computer running Windows XP before it can be detected and appear on the network map. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

I found this article very useful when networking my XP and Vista computers :).

I think I'm happy now that the settings I've made are correct - I think my problem now lies with my wireless adaptor/network :(

Is it Belkin branded? If so, ditch it! I had nothing but problems with Belkin products, random disconnections, couldn't get WPA or WPA2 to work and they're just ****!

I've got an Intel (built in) one I think - it's on a new Dell Vostro, connection to a Speedtouch 585.

The connection/security and internet access are all okay, it's just sharing that doesn't want to play :(

Have you checked all the things in my post?

In Vista, right click the file and select "properties" than "Sharing" and select "share". From the drop down menu in the new opened window select "everyone" and then add that. Worked for me :).

I think so? My wired connection works fine on my current settings, so I think everything is setup okay?

Edit: This is really annoying! I can now connect to the laptop from the desktop, but try the other way, laptop to desktop, and it says the "folder is not accessible, you might not have permission etc"

I must be something simple that I'm missing?

I've decided that Vista didn't like my wireless router :(

Nevermind, I've recommissioned my trusty old Netgear and everything’s fine!

Cheers,
