Howzit Guys,

I'm not too sure if this question should be in hardware or Software as it's related to both, in a way.

I have two machines at home, a laptop and a Shuttle XPC SN85G4.

The Shuttle's running Windows Vista Ultimate and my laptop is running windows XP Professional.

I leave the laptop on a lot, it hasn't turned off in two weeks. And fankly I'm not too worried about it. But the Shuttle I am, I was wondering, is it 'bad' to leave it on all the time, or is turning it off and of worse?

Is it bad for Windows to stay on all the time either?

It's actually good for your machines as there isn't any heat/power cycling.

Not so good for your power bills though.

don't forget the damage you are doing to the environment.....

only joking. i don't give a flip. i leave my pc on pretty much 24/7 :p

Power bills isn't an issue as our rent is lights/water incl. ;).

So, is there any software I can run so the pc is actually in use and doing something usful over night?

It's all about moderation. If you turned a PC on and off every 2 seconds, it would probably be destroyed within a month, However, you could probably turn it on and off every 30 minutes and find it lasted for 20 years before it was broken.

yeah my windows rig is on all the time as a large file storage machine and download box :) i only really turn it off when i am away from the house for a few days :d i try to turn all my bulbs off though to conserve the leccy, o yeah and the monitor :)
