Never tip in Chinese restaurant?

Apparently in Chinese restaurant the tip always goes to owner as opposed to the staff. So don't bother tipping in Chinese restaurant? That's what my mate reckons and he has some GCSEs.

Never tip ever because you live in a civilized country where people are paid minimum wage and if they are not you should call your local trading standards/government agency and tell them you have suspicions that there are illegal employment and pay issues at said establishment how you would know this, of course, is a mystery.

I don't tip the bus driver, train driver, supermarket checkout staff, shop assistant or receptionist for their paid work, but damn that guy that brought me my food from 20m over there, cooked by someone else...... He's worthy of 10% of my bill FOR SURE.
 
I hate tipping. If they put the price up I wouldn't care, but I feel pressured to tip and it's awkward as Hell.

I have lots of American friends and a couple have told me one of the things they like about Uber vs. taxis is that in Uber you don't have to tip, it's just a fixed price for a service. So even Americans are subject to it.
 
A friend of mine recently worked in an Indian restaurant for a while, all the tips went to the owner there too (Unless he wasn't looking)

I don't tip taxis now. In fact I rarely tip anyone. I do pay a 'service charge' in a restaurant when it's added to the bill but that's about it.

what happens when you tell the bus driver to keep the change, is it considered a tip? do they keep it?
I never tip unless its keep the change cos I dont want it.
 
I went to a Chinese restaurant last week - it was a £9.99 lunchtime special. After paying with a ten pound note I said keep the change. I didn't want to hang around for a penny and they seemed really happy about it, so it was win-win.

Not because I think they need the money but because those jobs suck, nobody has ever answered "waiter" when asked what they want to be when they grow up, and these people often work silly hours when we're spending time with family, so cheering their day up a bit just seems like the right thing to do.

I also tip my postie and bin men at Christmas and any time I get food delivered the driver also gets a tip.
 
I think tipping regularly as come over from the US.

British people only used to tip when the service was exceptionally good.

As I see it, the “service charge”, usually added to bills in good London restaurants IS a tip, I pay it willingly, it saves me from having to mentally calculate 12.5%, or whatever.
That’ll be about my total contribution to this thread, as an ex Black Cab driver, and seasoned visitor to the U.S., tipping threads are akin to negotiating a minefield while being sniped at by sharpshooters.

Thats just your interpretation. There are some waiter/waitresses/barbers I know that throughly enjoy there job especially in the high end restaurants and barbers. They pride themselves on providing excellent service.

Tipping should be based on the quality of service provided and not because of pity.

It's not because of pity, but because I like doing it. That said, I'm a saffer and back home waiters and waitresses don't even get paid in many cases, their tips are their bread & butter. Aussies are the worst, I think the day an Aussie tips hell will freeze over.

I dont think ive been on a bus that takes "money" for 3 years :P
